Inspiration for Calendar Products

Our yearly rundown of what is on trend for upcoming calendar products.

The Roaring 20's

What do the hit HBO series "Boardwalk Empire", Woody Allen's Oscar nominated "Midnight in Paris" and the upcoming film remake of "The Great Gatsby" have in common? They all take place in a decade of dynamic social change populated by intense cultural and artistic exploration. All things 20's will be back in trend in the next couple of years, from fashion plates by Georges Barbier and art deco styling, to vintage photography from the era.

The Resurgence of Handmade

The last several years have seen a resurgence of things made by hand. Perhaps because of the global recession, people have gone back to the basics. Craftmanship has become important, with traditional methods and organic materials gaining traction. Nothing screams quality and craftmanship like the art of quilting. Bridgeman has recently partnered with several collections rich in quilt imagery:

Animal Details

Look closely and you'll find them hiding in some of the most iconic paintings in the world. Love for our pets is a universal human trait, from pre-history to modern times, as portrayed by such artists as Gauguin, Goya, Van Eyck and Titian. We think that putting an 'old' twist on an enduring theme, makes it new again.

Van Gogh: Up Close and Personal

The Dutch artist has been everywhere lately; with a critically acclaimed biography, Van Gogh: The Life, published by Random House, and a successful exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Van Gogh's popularity endures, and it's not only his unique painting style which retains our fascination. Speculation about his troubled personal life only adds to the allure. For a different take on the post-Impressionist, feature small details that highlight his use of color and his expressive brushwork.

Bridgeman offers a custom scan service for our clients. Email us at newyork@bridgemanart.com if you would like us to create high resolution scans of particular details.

Flowers

Florals continue to be a popular subject matter. Our spotlight artist is the French 17th century painter Nicolas Robert, who is considered to be the 'Rembrandt' of flowers. Robert's floral renderings look as modern today as they did three centuries ago. These flowers also come with a great story. 'Iris' is from a series of paintings from a book of love poems commissioned by Charles de Sainte-Maure for his beloved, Julie d'Angennes. "Guirlande de Julie" was an extraordinary manuscript and an incredible gift, but poor Charles had to wait another four years before Julie would accept his proposal of marriage!
