Bridgeman Art Library holds an impressive archive of painting, illustration, maps and ephemera that collectively illustrate the shared American historical and cultural experience.
Recognizing the exceptional role historical societies play in deepening our understanding of history by housing rare maps, photographs, manuscripts and artifacts, Bridgeman is in a unique position to offer more than just fine art to its diverse clientele. Bridgeman Art Library represents more historical societies in the United States than any other image archive: Chicago, New-York, Pennsylvania, Dallas, Massachusetts, American Antiquarian Society, Boston Athenaeum, Newberry Library in Chicago and Historic New England to name a few. Taken together, key periods of American history are represented, from the Native American era, to colonial times, to the Civil War, Westward Expansion, the Gold Rush of the mid-19th century, the Great Depression and Prohibition of the 1930's, and more. Additionally, Bridgeman is the exclusive distributor of the world-famous Peter Newark American Pictures collection. Founded in 1965, Peter Newark Pictures is an eclectic mix that is exceptionally rich in its holdings of Americana, the migration and settlement of the American West, and Native American imagery. Our archive abounds in American content from some of the nation?s top museums including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Houston, Detroit, Dayton, Indianapolis, Delaware, Phoenix and San Diego; the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Barnes Foundation and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
