Industry professionals, political leaders and stars of the creative world gathered in Brussels from 6-8 June for this year’s World Copyright Summit. Organised by CISAC (the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers), The Bridgeman Art Library and the Artists’ Collecting Society were represented by Harriet Bridgeman and Ingrid Parry, and the two-day schedule of debates, fora, super sessions and panel discussions were hosted by keynote speakers such as musicians Robin Gibb and Jean-Michel Jarre, poets Maureen Duffy and Wendy Cope, and artists Hervé Di Rosa and Frank Stella.
This year’s three major foci for the conference were:
- CREATE: The global eco-system for creators and creative industries.
- CONNECT: The digital economy and new business models.
- RESPECT: Authors’ rights and the legislative & social environment.
Harriet Bridgeman commented, ‘The hot topic this year was the launch of Apple’s iCloud and how it will impact on rights owners. Our consultant Dr. Jeremy Silver chaired a discussion on ‘the contours of this new avatar, the new opportunities offered by cloud services and the consequences for creators and authors’ societies’. There is general concern about the speed at which technology is moving forward against the time it takes to implement new copyright directives and frameworks to support them.’
