Giant Sparrows Christa Demetriou on what drew her to Frida Kahlo
"Pain, anguish, confusion, passion, love, lust, loneliness and art. Frida Kahlo painted her life for us all to view with an intense honesty.
We wanted to launch our site with a woman artist as so many of the recognized great artists of the past are men
Frida Kahlo (1910-54) was immediately in the front running as her work is instantly recognizable and has so much meaning and detail crafted into every square inch. Self-Portrait on the Borderline between Mexico and the United States stood out as a great image as it depicts two very different worlds, that of ancient Mexico, and the industrialised USA.
It’s the kind of image that you can look at for hours, discovering new details and inventing your own version of what might have been going through Kahlo’s mind as she composed and painted the picture.
As Kahlo stands between the two worlds in her striking pink dress, we felt that viewers of the work wouldn’t be able to resist selecting this image to carry with them wherever they go."
Cases are available for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3 and a Blackberry Curve via www.giantsparrows.co.uk
