McCann Erickson produced a poster campaign for Maestro at the close of 2008, where the brief was to encourage consumers to use their debit card instead of cash for small value items.

The four executions feature historical figureheads including Charles Darwin and Adam Smith, sourced from Bridgeman, as they appear on Bank of England banknotes.

These images were out of copyright and there were no restrictions for the designer regarding manipulation and cropping.

The heads are attached to drawings of men partaking in activities usually reserved for pensioners - driving an electronic buggy, walking with a stick and tackling a word search puzzle whilst relaxing on a rocking chair.

All four executions have the strapline; "Cash has retired" and exposure was outdoor on tubes and billboards.
