Abraham Lincoln 1864 American School, Private Collection / Peter Newark American Pictures

Abraham Lincoln was born on 12 February 1809 in a one-room log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky. His parents were poor pioneer farmers and Lincoln was largely self-educated.

The16th President of the United States successfully led the country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War, preserving the Union and ending slavery. He was the first American president to be assassinated.
