Royal Institution Relaunch
We are amused: Her Majesty re-opens the Royal Institution of Science
The Royal Institution is delighted that Her Majesty the Queen will be attending their Grand Launch on 28 May following a major 22 million pound facelift. We thought it would be timely to highlight the photos and illustrations from this collection as well as others we represent that are rich in science and medicine.
Since the Royal Institution was established over 200 years ago, it has observed 14 of its resident scientists receive the Nobel Prize, and witnessed the discovery of 10 of the chemical elements. Famous scientists such as Humphry Davy, Michael Faraday and William and Lawrence Bragg all based their innovative and groundbreaking work at the RI and the Library holds portraits of these and many other eminent scientists.
The RI is home to some of the world's most important scientific discoveries, including the miners' safety lamp and the electric generator.
Baron Jean Louis Alibert (1768-1837) performing the vaccination against smallpox in the Chateau of Liancourt The Bridgeman Art Library holds thousands of other images depicting medical scenes, anatomy, scientific inventions and eminent scientists through the ages from around the world. Archive Charmet includes 10,000 scientifc and medical illustrations and centuries of botanical and wildlife illustrations can be found through collections which include the Natural History Museum in London, Royal Geographical Society and Oxford University Museum of Natural History.
